Bribery Commission probes speaker on eight charges – lankalokaya reports

The Bribery Commission is now inquiring into a complaint of wrongdoing against speaker of parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne in a first in Sri Lanka, lankalokaya reports.

Quoting a commission official, it said the speaker is facing accusations on eight counts, as per a complaint lodged by deputy secretary general of parliament Chaminda Kularatne.

They are: receiving two fuel allowances, misusing vehicles and equipment belonging to parliament’s media unit, obtaining lunch without making payments, appointing an investigation officer unlawfully and making him payments and providing food and transport, using two official residences, refusing to provide information sought under right to information in an attempt to conceal his wrongdoing, and interfering in the administration of parliamentary staff.

Opposition MPs, including Dayasiri Jayasekara, referred to these accusations during speeches in parliament in the past two days.
