Dedicated police division to combat surging cybercrime – Ananda Wijepala

The Ministry of Public Security has announced the establishment of a specialised police division dedicated to tackling the rapid increase in cybercrime across Sri Lanka.

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala revealed the decision Friday (06) during the inauguration of the Polpitiya Police Station.

The Minister highlighted the urgency of the initiative by disclosing that law enforcement currently receives between 23 and 25 reports of cybercrime daily.

Describing these figures as alarmingly high, Wijepala said that the new division will be equipped with specialised technology and advanced technical knowledge necessary to investigate and resolve complex digital offenses that traditional policing methods are often unequipped to handle.

Minister Wijepala said that the systematic implementation of new investigative tools is already underway, alongside a rigorous internal reform process.

This reform includes creating clear pathways for the advancement of high-performing officers while simultaneously establishing strict mechanisms to identify and remove personnel engaged in corruption or professional misconduct.
