In line with the government’s policy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, a 50-megawatt wind power project in Mannar was officially launched this morning (15) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The project is being developed by Hayleys Fentons Limited and is aimed at harnessing the strong natural wind resources available in the Mannar region. The state-of-the-art wind power plant will consist of 10 modern wind turbines and is expected to generate 207 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
A key highlight of the initiative is its highly competitive tariff structure. Electricity generated by the plant will be supplied to the national grid at a rate of USD 0.0465 per unit, equivalent to approximately LKR 14.37 per unit. Officials noted that this is one of the lowest tariffs ever secured for wind power generation in Sri Lanka.
Construction of the project commenced today and is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
Addressing the gathering, Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody described the project as a major step forward in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy journey. He stated that the initiative would not only strengthen the national power supply but also deliver tangible benefits to the people of Mannar.
Senior officials from the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Sustainable Energy Authority and Hayleys Group representatives were also present at the launch ceremony.
