The Vanni Kingdom of that day was a majestic land encompassing the present-day four districts of Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Mannar, and Kilinochchi, filled with dense forests, lakes, seas, and fertile fields.

Adangappattu

Even during the eras when the Jaffna Kingdom and the Kotte Kingdom fell under foreign influence, the Vanni land asserted its independent sovereignty against foreigners. It is for this reason that this land was historically and proudly called “Adangappattu” (the region that does not submit to foreign rule). The dense forests, swamps, and the unique terrain of Vanni naturally taught martial strategies to the people who lived there.

The Rise of Pandara Vanniyan and his Vanni Land

In the latter part of the 18th century, foreign rule over the island of Lanka was gradually shifting from Dutch dominance to the control of the British Empire. But the Vanni land, under the leadership of Pandara Vanniyan, stood tall as Adangappattu.

Kulasekaran Vairamuthu Pandara Vanniyan, hailing from the lineage of Vanni chieftain-kings, accepted the responsibility of protecting Vanni’s autonomy without any compromise. With the support of his brothers, Periya Meyyanar and Kailaya Vanniyan, and his commanders, he began to fortify the Vanni soil.

In this situation, the British sought to exploit the natural resources of the Vanni land and turn the Tamils into their slaves. However, Pandara Vanniyan refused to bow to the commands of the British rulers and upheld the independence of the Vanni soil.

The Mullaitivu Fort War

As history progressed, the greatest blow struck by the great warrior Pandara Vanniyan against British imperialism, by capturing the Mullaitivu Fort which stood as an obstacle to Vanni’s sovereignty, was the Battle of Mullaitivu Fort that took place on August 25, 1802.

The British had been monitoring Vanni from their military fort on the Mullaitivu coast. A vast quantity of weapons and cannons were stored there. Pandara Vanniyan, who maintained good relations with the Kandyan kings, planned a major attack.

Yes, on August 25, 1802, the Vanni Tiger force led by Pandara Vanniyan pounced like a storm upon the British fort in Mullaitivu. The British troops, despite possessing modern weapons, were completely disarrayed and shattered by the onslaught and swordsmanship of the Vanni warriors.

Within a very short time, the Mullaitivu Fort was completely captured by Pandara Vanniyan’s heroic army. The British soldiers in the fort fled in all directions. The cannons and a large amount of ammunition there were seized by Pandara Vanniyan’s forces.

The British flag flying there was torn down from the Mullaitivu Fort, and the independent flag of Adangappattu flew majestically over the Mullai Fort. This attack was a great historical event that shook the entire British Empire of that time.

British Defeat and Treachery

During the era when the British were expanding their empire upon which the sun never set, the defeats they faced and the retreats they made in Vanni, in the north of Eelam, against a single chieftain-king were numerous.

The British commander Lieutenant von Driberg attempted to infiltrate Vanni with large armies multiple times, yet faced constant defeats due to Pandara Vanniyan’s war strategies.

Realizing that they could never defeat Pandara Vanniyan on the battlefield, the British resorted to that cruel weapon that always occupies the dark pages of history: “Treachery.” They lured a few individuals close to Pandara Vanniyan to their side with offers of money and power.

On October 31, 1811, while Pandara Vanniyan was resting with his small force at Katsilaimadu, a British force led by Lieutenant von Driberg, guided by traitors, surrounded the area. Even then, Pandara Vanniyan did not fear, but drew his sword and fought with valor. Very shortly after Vanni fell, by 1815, the whole of Sri Lanka came under British control.

Enduring Legacy and Call to Unity

With the passing of Pandara Vanniyan, who shed his blood for the independence of his motherland and sacrificed his life as a great warrior, the autonomy of the Vanni land temporarily fell to the British and those who came after them. Yet, the sense of freedom and valor he sowed still smolders as an inextinguishable flame in the veins of Eelam Tamils to this day.

In the present day, our heritage, culture, soil, education, and language are facing new forms of challenges.

Today, we must show the same resolve that Pandara Vanniyan displayed against foreign dominance, in protecting our identities. It is the paramount duty of each one of us to protect our motherland, which our warriors protected by making themselves seeds and shedding blood, as well as our Tamil language and our culture that is intertwined with our way of life.

The era in which the great warrior Pandara Vanniyan ruled stands as excellent testimony to the self-governing authority of the Tamils. The life lesson Pandara Vanniyan’s life teaches us is that under no circumstances should we sell ourselves to foreign forces and their trivial favors.

Our true return of gratitude to every brave warrior who became an offering in the war to reclaim our soil is for each of us to discard selfishness, and distinctions of caste, region, and class, and to unite as dignified Tamils in the path of Pandara Vanniyan to forge our own identity.

History is not merely notes; it is an epic written in the crimson blood of warriors who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their motherland.
